Dear colleagues,

The Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) will use the 20th meeting of its Governing Board to launch a new version of its global GBIF web portal, providing greatly enhanced access to the world's largest database of documented evidence for the distribution of species across the planet.

The scientific meeting in Berlin on 9 October will also demonstrate how researchers in many countries have used the data mobilized through GBIF's network of data publishers and Participants to tackle questions critical to reducing the loss of biodiversity and the services it provides to people.

Please find the complete text including the detailed symposium programme at: http://www.gbif.org/communications/news-and-events/showsingle/article/new-gbif-web-portal-to-be-launched/

We hereby invite our colleagues and research fellows to join the public events of this annual GBIF meeting in Berlin:

When? 9 October
Where? Auditorium Friedrichstraße, Friedrichstr. 180 - Quartier 110, 10117 Berlin (Germany)

The portal launch starts at 11.00am, it is open to the press and public, and will be streamed live via the Internet at https://new.livestream.com/gbif/2013portal. It is accompanied by presentations of how GBIF's partners in Colombia and Japan are providing free and open access to information about biodiversity in their own countries, using open-source tools and resources developed by the global network.
Later at 13.30 the annual GBIF Science Symposium, also to be streamed live at https://new.livestream.com/gbif/2013sciencesymposium, will showcase key uses of the data made available through the network, including the identification of priority areas for plant conservation in South America; and an investigation of how tropical forests are responding to climate change.

All are welcome to attend the launch and Science Symposium in Berlin - please register at http://gb20.gbif.org/GB20/GB20reg/freeReg0
