Absent punctuation, it could be a list of three genera. My impression is 
that punctuation has a higher entropy than spelling in languages using 
the Latin alphabet (I know this is true in English), so it is likely 
that any system for human use that *relies* on punctuation will fail. 
Just getting students to copy the parentheses exactly in author 
citations is a challenge.
