Hi John,
Laurence Mound has already been consulted by the person who wants the "insect" identified, but the conclusion is inconclusive. In particular, the "abdomen" doesn't seem right for a thrips. I expect it is mainly the apparent "wing" shape which is suggestive of a thrips...
Cheers, Stephen

Hi Stephen,
Looks like a thrips (Thysanoptera) to me. I think some species are known to be pollinators of orchids. Try Laurence Mound (CSIRO, Canberra) he should be able to help.
John
