It¹s that time of year again! It's been a banner year for biodiversity
discovery, and there is a contest to showcase the most interesting,
glamorous, bizarre, and quirky species that were described in 2011.
Nominations for the Top 10 Species (http://species.asu.edu/Top10
<http://species.asu.edu/Top10> ) for 2010 will close on March 25th. Last
year, the Top 10 received excellent PR (including a top 10 Tweets, Penguin
Book Publishers contract for a children¹s book, and many stories in
magazines, newspapers, and radio), and we anticipate the same response this
year. It is our hope that the "Top 10" draws attention to biodiversity,
taxonomy, exploration, and our planet.
If you want to nominate a new species, send your nomination directly to Sara
Pennak at IISE (Sara.Pennak at asu.edu <mailto:Sara.Pennak at asu.edu> note that
website submissions are now closed). In your nomination, please include (1)
why you are nominating the new species; and (2) a link to the pdf where the
species was described (or at least the first author's name). Please send
nominations to Sara by March 25.
Go, New Species, Go!
P.S. For some interesting biodiversity stats, take a look at the State of
the Observed Species (SOS) Report for 2011
(http://timgostony.com/iisetemp/SOS2011_FINALr.pdf) at and the Retrospective
for the decade (http://timgostony.com/iisetemp/RetroSOS__FINAL.pdf). These
are produced each year in conjunction with the Top 10 New Species.
