[Taxacom] i4Life Call for Pilot Projects

Perhaps, Chris, you should apply for some of the $$$, so you can fund Systema Dipterorum, by adding its data to the aggregators as an additional task! Sounds like lifting yourself with your own boot straps, but it might work!

>I am expected to build and maintain the Systema Dipterorum<
I'm not sure you are "expected" to do so, but if you are going to do it for FREE, then I guess the price for philanthropy is to see other buggers making money from your hard work, but that's how it goes ...

Stephen

Wonderful,

i4Life is providing funds to local taxonomic checklists , etc., so they can
supply information to GSDs,

BUT no funding for the GSDs.

Apparently the assumption is that GSDs are free, no cost services available
to all!

As a developer and the sole maintainer of a GSD for about 15% of the known
world Biodiversity (that is, Insecta: Diptera or flies), I continue to find
this amazing. I am expected to build and maintain the Systema Dipterorum
(formerly the BioSystematic Database of World Diptera) for FREE. And then
GBIF, IUCN Red List, BOLD, EMBL, ENA, IT IS, EoL) can freely help themselves
to a global names database of flies. And to ensure that I am doing my job,
i4Life Pilot projects will now fund others to add to my free
responsibilities!

Oh, well ...

Sincerely,

Chris Thompson

i4Life Call for Pilot Projects – Building content for the Catalogue of Life

The i4Life project is offering funding to establish and implement i4Life
Pilot Projects to enhance taxonomic content of GSDs that will check and
incorporate in their databases new scientific names and taxa, harvested from
Global Partners (GBIF, IUCN Red List, BOLD, EMBL ENA and Encyclopedia of
Life).

The Pilot Projects objective is to place as many new scientific names from
Global Partners as possible in taxonomic checklists and, then, supply them
to the Catalogue of Life during routine updates.
Unincorporated names will be returned to i4Life with annotations to show
their status.

The i4Life budget commits approximately €200k plus overheads for this
purpose and the duration of Pilot Projects will be 5 months.
Eligibility criteria are governed by European Commission rules.
Deadline: 31 August 2012 - 12:00 am (midnight) (Paris local time).

If you are interested you will find all information and documents on the
i4Life webpage: http://i4life.eu/pilots.php
