I use a free program called Pegasus Mail (www.pmail.com), which is
like Eudora or Thunderbird in allowing management of emails into
folders and so on, but stores them as plain text in the files.  So
if the program is lost and discontinued 30 years down the line, it's
not needed to access the email.  It also stores attachments as
encoded text, so they get preserved.  I have to admit, since
web-based email became more common a few years ago I've gotten lazy
about downloading and archiving my emails, but I do it every couple
of years.
