Colleagues -

You may have heard that USGS has de-funded NBII for the remainder of FY2011. Of course, we expected that it would be terminated entirely in 2012 and had planned to send a letter urging USGS to retain certain programs.

Well, in light of this precipitous decision, we made it a priority to communicate these concerns to USGS leadership.

Please take a look at the attached letter and let me know if you can sign on.

ASAP. I WOULD LIKE TO GET THIS LETTER OUT THE DOOR BY COB NEXT TUESDAY.

IF YOU KNOW OF OTHERS WHO WOULD BE LIKELY TO SIGN ON, PLEASE CIRCULATE IT TO THEM AND ASK THEM TO GET BACK TO ME.

IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS OR CONCERNS ABOUT THE CONTENT, PLEASE LET ME KNOW. WE CAN EDIT AND PERHAPS EVEN ADD OTHER NBII COMPONENTS, THOUGH THE MOST EXPEDITIOUS WAY TO ADDRESS OTHER COMPONENTS IS WITH INDIVIDUAL FOLLOW-ON LETTERS. HOWEVER, I WOULD BE GLAD TO COORDINATE AN EFFORT FOR MUTUAL SUPPORT FOR ANY SPECIFIC COMPONENT OF CONCERN TO YOU OR YOUR ORGANIZATION.
