a small correction to the particular example I chose: EoL has it both as
Agathinus tridens (http://www.eol.org/pages/395592) and as Curculio tridens
(http://www.eol.org/pages/840577). General point still applies ...

Subject: WTaxa and data harvesting via CoL, EoL, etc.

I have only just begun to unravel a something which has gone VERY wrong in the
weevil data harvested from WTaxa by CoL, etc. Basically, what CoL, EoL, etc.
have is largely nonsense. There are thousands of examples, but just one is that
there is no other record of the belid Agathinus tridens other than as its
original combination as Curculio tridens in Curculionidae! Again I have to ask
where is the quality control on (probably automated) harvesting of data from
source databases like WTaxa? This page (http://www.eol.org/pages/840577) is
highly misleading and carries no warnings to that effect. It is rubbish that
this species (as Curculio tridens) is [quote] recognized by MA Alonso-Zarazaga &
CHC Lyal (authors), M Sánchez-Ruiz (technical editor), Electronic Catalogue of
Weevil names (Curculionoidea) [unquote]. I really do wish that the "acronyms"
would stop feeding us "the brown stuff"!
