If an individual scholar finds something to be of sufficient interest to 
compile and organize it, then it's likely enough that it will be useful 
to others, and especially in unexpected ways - and if not natural 
selection will ensure that it's ignored. Put up a simple press release 
about giant slugs in one place in Ontario -

throughout the province - http://www.doingnaturalhistory.com/?p=37 - and 
tell you about their giant slugs.

How this kind of thing is aggregated is a different matter, of course.
