JOB DETAILS:

eMonocot - a major UK initiative to create a revolutionary online platform for organising and accessing plant diversity information

This is a unique opportunity to join a consortium project team to support the delivery of an exciting NERC-funded project, eMonocot, which aims to change the taxonomic process and the mechanisms by which biodiversity information is delivered. The overarching objective of eMonocot is to produce a web-based treatment of all monocot plants, targeted at biodiversity and environmental scientists, but available to a range of users including volunteer biologists, the general public and schools. RBG Kew is the lead research organisation, Oxford University and the Natural History Museum in London are the other consortium members.

As part of the project team, you will work closely with monocot taxonomists at Kew and elsewhere, content developers and IT specialists at Oxford University and the Natural History Museum. You will also interact with a broad spectrum of other stakeholders, promoting communication, employing flexible thinking and taking responsibility for timely delivery of project targets.

You will lead a team gathering and creating taxonomic content for an innovative internet platform on monocot plants, with the responsibility for managing the two remaining team members and for generating a portion of the content yourself.

You will have a Degree in Biology or related discipline (2.1 or above), training in a biodiversity-oriented discipline and experience of biodiversity data resources. In addition it is essential that you are familiar with eTaxonomic software and systems and possess experience including digitisation, storing, structuring, transforming, and managing data, ensuring data quality, using Microsoft Office, creating and using simple databases and creating web pages. You will also possess the ability to inspire, lead and motivate the content team members to ensure that eMonocot targets are met, the ability to help team members plan their work and check their progress and experience of or potential for performance management and staff appraisal and development.

You will be able to work effectively both as a team player and independently, and show initiative in solving complex problems with diligence and attention to detail. You will possess good interpersonal skills and be a confident communicator who is ready to help the eMonocot team to make a significant contribution to the exciting new discipline of biodiversity informatics.
