[Taxacom] species number

Hi John, I reproduce here some parts of the e-mail I sent Maria. Truth
is there is no good answer as yet.
There is no definitive place place to find such things for amoeboid
taxa. The nomenclatural problems are immense, and most resources
available online do not take into account a number of uncertainties
related to protistan taxa.
The ultimate resource for names is here: http://www.organismnames.com
You can go there, type in the taxon of interest and see how many names
are listed. For Entamoeba for instance:
http://www.organismnames.com/query.htm?q=entamoeba&searchType=simple&p=0&pp=100&so=a0
then count different names. This thing does not take into account
synonymy, so imagine there is something like 20% inflation on the
number you get. Also, you need to define clearly what you want to do
about infra and sub specific taxa (I tend to count them as species).
cheers,
Dan
