JOB DETAILS:
RBG Kew has recently embarked on an exciting new collaborative project to open up European natural history heritage for Europeana. Kew, in conjunction with 22 research institutions in Europe successfully applied for a grant award from the EU to deliver Open Up! - an EU Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) project. Kew's main tasks in the project are to enable the provision of herbarium specimen metadata and to set up and deliver a data quality service for botanical names. To facilitate the delivery of this project Kew is recruiting a Senior Developer.
The successful candidate will be part of the Science Applications IT team at Kew and work with key scientists to deliver the aims and objectives of workpackage 5 - "botanical community content provision, metadata catalogues and quality control". The tasks assigned to the post holder include the provision of herbarium specimen metadata in a structured format, development of a data quality web service (checking and resolution) for botanical names and developing a mechanism for the management of feedback on names from data providers.
You will need a recognised qualification in computer science or biodiversity informatics or the equivalent work-based experience. Proven expertise in one or more of the following is essential: Sybase Adaptive Server and MySQL, Java, HTML, Eclipse and/or CVS, Unix/Linux and BPMN, UML or DSDM. Additionally, a background in using procedural and object-orientated programming techniques and knowledge of SOA is required, as is first rate communication and influencing skills in order to liaise confidently with internal and external stakeholders.
