You truly don't get it. You can argue until you're an even deeper shade
of blue in the face, but there will always be people who don't share
your views. Telling them they can't have names for something that you
deem irrelevant isn't likely to change their minds.
Linnaeus developed a system of genera and differentiae in order to
diagnose all the species that God had created. He added epithets as a
mnemonic. When others started combining the generic names and epithets,
he could have said "You people don't understand the importance of what
I've done", but instead he took credit for it and became the father of
binomial nomeclature. Nomenclature lasts when it can accommodate a
multitude of theoretical underpinnings. The Linnaean system has done
just fine so far, but if there is truly no more room at the inn,
Phylocode is inevitable.
