[Taxacom] RES: Surprise from a whole-genome study

I admit to being very ignorant of the research basis for recognizing lateral gene transfer. Out of curiosity, what is the evidence that a genetic sequences is derived from another organism rather than representing a convergent development?

Hello Bob,

Yes, it's one of the amazing surprises thanked to the genomic studies.
Probably HGT is more common than one can wonder.
And actually a new piece to the puzzle that we have to face (and overcome) to figure out the pylogenetic and phylogenomic overviews.

All the best,
Vitor.

Nearly as exciting as the finding that photosynthesis in at least one nudibranch is operated by genes in the algal symbionts *and* the host nudibranch, thanks to HGT.
