I would once again like to reiterate the main components of this whole
discussion, and how, if at all, they are related:
3 distinct issues:
(1) e-only nomenclature
(2) centralization of taxonomic data
(3) registration requirement for new names and nomenclatural acts
some people are arguing that since (1) is allegedly a necessity (due to
publishers soon giving up on paper, libraries soon not buying it, and/or
taxonomists saying to hell with it and opting for "career enhancing supplements"
(i.e., trendy e-only publications)), it follows that we need (3) (or else we
allegedly risk uncontrolled taxonomic vandalism from self-published, non peer
reviewed dodgy e-journals), and this is somehow being linked with (2). I note
that (2) is the most attractive of (1), (2) and (3), in that we surely all would
like a single place to go to find out anything we want to know about taxonomy
and biodiversity. But does our desire for (2) really require (1) and/or (3)??
