Dear members,

The Institute of Marine Biology and Genetics
(IMBG) of the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research
(HCMR), invites applications for four (4)
experienced researchers, funded by the EU-FP7
�MARBIGEN� project �Supporting research potential
for MARine BIodiversity and GENomics in the
Eastern Mediterranean�. This project aims at
supporting IMBG excellence in the fields of
biodiversity and genomics, by integration of
phenotypic, community ecology and genomic
approaches within an evolutionary context. It
includes upgrading existing and acquiring new
equipment for automated 3D phenotyping, genomic
data production and bioinformatics, taking
advantage of the knowledge and experience
existing in excellent research entities of the EU
though exchanges of researchers, the organisation
of workshops and seminars, and hiring incoming
experienced scientific personnel.

  IMBG is located in Crete, Greece

15 km east of the city of Heraklion by the
seashore. Its focus is on studying biodiversity
at all levels of biological organization, from
genes to ecosystems. It leads the Greek national
network for biodiversity research (related to
ESFRI infrastructure �LIFEWATCH�), is a member of
the national network for genomic research, and
participates in the pan-European ESFRI
infrastructure �EMBRC� (European Marine Biological Resource
Centre).

Specifically, experienced researchers are to be
recruited for the following positions:

1. Bioinformatician with interest / experience in
applying genomic approaches in organismal and
population biology. Ability in analysis of next
generation sequencing data is of major
importance. Experience in gene annotation, genome
assembly and phylogenomics are is also considered

2. Bioinformatician with substantial experience
in genomics and metagenomics in marine
prokaryotic microorganisms and interest in
integration with environmental data. Experience
in analysis of microbial diversity data, produced
mainly by next generation sequencing will be

3.  Researcher with sound background in
biodiversity research, with emphasis in
biodiversity informatics, and proven abilities in
informatics technologies for data management and
programming. Applicants should be able to develop
novel applications (e.g. via web) that will
facilitate the organization, analysis and
dissemination of biodiversity information (for

4. Researcher with sound background in studying
biodiversity and functioning of benthic
ecosystems.  Applicants should also be capable of
developing new methodologies to study their
subject and to compare patterns of information
coming from different levels of biological
organization (from genes to communities) and
different levels of observation (spatial,
temporal, functional) (for more info please

Candidates must have a PhD in biological sciences
and at least three years of postdoctoral
experience, a demonstrated record of significant
research and the potential to make substantial
contributions as independent investigators.

The expected starting date for the positions is
within December 2010. Gross salaries will be �
4500 per month and duration of contracts will be
initially one year, extendable for two further years.
