[Taxacom] Paper on botanical collecting

Dear Niels

One such paper is "Hints for Hard Pressed Collectors" by my old boss and mentor, the late Peter H. Davis who collected tens of thousands of specimens in Turkey and every other Mediterranean country except Albania (plus a few elsewhere). It was published as Watsonia 4: 283-289 (1961). A version without the original pagination can be downloaded from the web at http://www.herbarium.rdg.ac.uk/making_specimens/lib/pdf/collector_hints.pdf

If you can get hold of a copy, the 1957 British Museum work "Instructions for Collectors, no. 10, Plants" that Davis cites is incredibly useful although many of the techniques (particularly ones involving chemicals) might now have to be adapted to meet current international or national safety etc. legislation.

Also try more modern books like "The Herbarium Handbook" by Bridson, which is still in print and available to order from Amazon, NHBS and other booksellers.

Best wishes, Robert

Subject: [Taxacom] Paper on botanical collecting

Dear List,

Does anyone know of a paper on botanical collecting. So what to collect, which notes need to be made for the labels etc. Recently we received some collections just containing parts of composed and otherwise quite useless collections just because people do not know what to collect. Any suggestions are welcome,

Niels Raes
