Actually, it has also been signed by Michael Dixon, Director, The Natural
History Museum
Furthermore, "The suggestion of an Orphan Works licence for such
institutions, put forward under the Digital Economy Bill, would offer a
flexible system enabling access to collections to be improved for the
benefit of education and research around the world."
This is exactly what we should achieve: A separation of copyright policy for
economic vs scientific creation of works. This would also reflect the
different nature of the underlying business models: Science being paid
upfront, Publishing generating their income by selling (copyrighted)
products.
Though policy is made at a level far beyond the individual scientist, such
efforts as referred to in this thread aim exactly at that level and thus are
extremely important. It is important that our museums and funding bodies are
having a voice, especially in this age of lobbyism.
