I noticed that "Biodiversity Heritage Library" appears to have part of
the above works scanned, advertised as Vol. 1, 2 and 5 (couldn't find
3 & 4).
http://www.archive.org/stream/illustrationsofn01hewi#page/n6/mode/1up
http://www.archive.org/stream/illustrationsofn02hewi#page/n6/mode/1up
http://www.archive.org/stream/illustrationsofn05hewi#page/n6/mode/1up
These appear to be bound as shown in
http://www.archive.org/stream/illustrationsofn05hewi#page/n258/mode/1up
But, that volume setup does not appear to have any relation to
references listed in LepIndex cards! For example, study _Papilio
xenarchus_ (= Minoides/Eurytides xenarchus) on 5th plate on scanned
volume 1
http://www.archive.org/stream/illustrationsofn01hewi#page/n29/mode/1up
is given in LepIndex card as
Hewitson, 1861, Exot. Butt. 2. Pap. t. 5. f. 12
it seems to say "Vol 2"? Also, Lamas Neotropica Bibliography
1861d. Illustrations... exotic butterflies... London, John Van
Voorst. 2(39): [5-6], [39-40], [87-88], pls. [3], [20], [44]
(10 July), (40): [13-14], [49-50], [69-70] + i-iv +
[121-124], pls. [7], [25], [35] (29 October) [general;
Papilio xenarchus, P. gratianus, P. epenetus, Acraea
acipha, Pieris pisonis, Paromia (new genus) pulchra,
Epiphile adrasta; Ecuador, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico]
shows it as "vol. 2". However, plate 5 is not listed in belonging to
into this.
So my first question is: what is this "volume like" number in LepIndex
and Lamas bibliography mean?
The plate number is same, but things get totally weird futher on. Many
lepindex references using "volume" don't match at all the BHL idea of
"volume". The end result is that converting references to links in
(BHL) scanned work is almost impossible or huge work...
There apparently multiple volume bindings? And as all existing
refrences seem to be using some other concept of "volumes" than is
present in BHL scanned version, should we get these works scanned from
that other binding set?
Or what goes?
