I've often said to those who have never heard of cladistics that it's to 
biology as quantum mechanics (which they've usually heard of) is to physics.

I wonder if there's a way, in the present case, to usefully import some 
ideas about "cladogenic uncertainty" from the treatment of quantum 
uncertainties, either just as a conceptual model, or even as some of the 
computational methods.

not that I'm mathematical enough to understand either,
