To be fair, I actually wasn't trying to ask "What is a species?" (either
directly or indirectly). I carefully avoided that by stipulating that every
taxonomist on the planet agreed that the two populations were distinct
species.
Rather, I asked (in a roundabout sort of way, as I am prone to do) what
Curtis meant when he said he believed that "an ancestral species totally
transforming into a descendant species without lineage-splitting ... never
happens".
I suspect the answer lies in my (admitedly anemic) conception of what is
meant by "lineage-splitting".
