[Taxacom] Coccinellidae

Sounds to me Fabian like you are not very experienced in trying to identify taxa from such exotic places as Kenya! "The illustrated key to Kenyan Coccinellidae" is still a way away, I'm afraid! At least with Wikispecies, anybody who might have information and/or images can simply add the info and upload the images...
Stephen

Well Tony,

thank you for all the information, which I indeed checked out, well at
least party.

The problem with all that checklists and wikispecies is, that they dont
tell you how the lady bird looks like, and I am not in a position to use
them reasonably since:

- there is no way to get all the literature here in Nairobi, BHL and
others have improved the situation, but still very difficult to get all
- if I had all the literature, I would not have the time to follow it
through and compare all papers to the specimens I have, would be the
most expensive lady bird ever
- I am not doing a taxonomic revision which would justify that, but
simply want to know the species, nothing more (or less)
- original descriptions are nice to have, but doe not really help in my
case, I believe

So a key would be it, either world, or better for the region, even a
website with photos of all species or something like that. If you cannot
tell the species by this, fine with me, at least I had a short list of
genera or species to deal with, which would be the next step.

East Africa is a bit underrepresented in GBIF, and GBIF has no photos...

Hmm so where do I go from here?

best
Fabian

It has been compiled mainly with the aid of Zoological Record (Insecta), Korschefsky's Coccinellidae Catalogues, and original descriptions, wherever available. For groups such as Scymninae and Sticholotidinae, which are very poorly known from this region, Zoological Record and Korschefsky's catalogues were the only sources of information in many cases."

I know this is not everything you ask for, but it may be a start if you are unable to find a more structured key to the genera.
