I would choose the latter. I know one gentleman (in malacology) who is not
formally trained, yet the quality and quantity of his work exceeds some
professionals. He actually takes others to task for inferior scholarship.
I for one would be happy to have collaborated with just one or two of the
people with whom he has published papers. While I am no expert, I have no
doubt that many whom I know (curators, academics) recognize this
individual as an expert.

While such individuals may not be common, they are out there.
