Dear Colleagues,

Time is almost up regarding applications for possible job openings in systematic entomology at CDFA in the near future. Getting your application in by the due date will ensure that you will be considered if a position opens during the life of the eligible list being established. Please disperse widely (and quickly, given the due date is 14 January 2011!).
Cheers,
Steve

Position: Associate Insect Biosystematist

Plant Pest Diagnostics Center
California Department of Food and Agriculture
Sacramento, California

Application Due Date: 14 January 2011
Salary Range: $4,619.00 to $6,121.00 per month
Benefits: see <http://jobs.ca.gov/OEC/benefits/benefits.aspx>http://jobs.ca.gov/OEC/benefits/benefits.aspx

We are seeking applications from highly-qualified, morphology-leaning systematic entomologists for full time employment as scientists in the Entomology Lab of our Plant Pest Diagnostics Center (CDFA) in Sacramento, California. Please visit <http://cdfa.ca.gov/plant/ppd/entomology.html>http://cdfa.ca.gov/plant/ppd/entomology.html for an introduction to our lab, which currently has a scientific staff of 12 insect systematists, 7 technicians and numerous student technicians, with a wide variety of taxonomic expertise across the insects and other arthropods and molluscs.

The eligible list (from which we must hire) lasts for at least one year (and up to three years), so I encourage systematic entomologists with varied expertise to apply.

The primary duties for an Associate Insect Biosystematist include the following:
    1) Perform timely and accurate identifications and diagnostics of the insect group(s) assigned – broad familiarity and knowledge of your group is necessary for this function. Provide expert consultation to internal and external client groups.
    2) Conduct research in systematics and taxonomy of insects or other arthropods (note, this does not have to be the same group as diagnostic responsibility), resulting in scientific publications. Applying for external research grant funding is encouraged.
    3) Contribute to the growth and improvement of the California State Collection of Arthropods, our primary reference collection.
    4) Participate in the general functions and activities of the Entomology Lab and the greater Plant Pest Diagnostics Center team. Please visit <http://cdfa.ca.gov/plant/ppd/>http://cdfa.ca.gov/plant/ppd/ for an introduction to the Branch.

Minimum Qualifications: Possession of a Doctoral Degree or its equivalent [from an accredited college or university] in Entomology [or related field] with a specific focus in systematic entomology; OR Two years of identification and research experience in systematic entomology after obtaining a Master’s Degree in Entomology [or related field] with a specific focus in systematic entomology, to encourage doctoral students nearing the end of their programs to apply; OR One year of experience in the California state service performing the duties of an Insect Biosystematist.

Desirable Qualifications: See <http://jobs.ca.gov/CASPB/sup/BulPreview.asp?R1=093199&R2=00100534&R3=9fannm>http://jobs.ca.gov/CASPB/sup/BulPreview.asp?R1=093199&R2=00100534&R3=9fannm for details.

Application procedure: The application should be submitted by 14 January 2011 in one of two ways:

    1) The preferred method is to apply electronically – see <http://jobs.ca.gov/CASPB/sup/BulPreview.asp?R1=093199&R2=00100534&R3=9fannm>http://jobs.ca.gov/CASPB/sup/BulPreview.asp?R1=093199&R2=00100534&R3=9fannm for details.
