following a suggestion in an amusing off-list conversation on this thread,
perhaps we can say that the bud "florberted", where "florberty" is the botanical
equivalent of puberty ...

Did I miss something here? I think the process you are describing is called
"flowering" aka "blossoming" or "blooming"...
Or maybe these terms are not technical enough for your enquirer.
