The Cornell Plant Pathology Herbarium (CUP) is looking for a new permanent Curator. The Curator manages day-to-day operations including loans, data entry, tours, and new accessions. He/she helps develop the collections database, repairs specimens, participates in outreach, and recruits and supervises students and volunteers.
We are especially interested in applicants with a strong background in mycology, plant pathology, and/or lichenology. Applicants should have a bachelor’s or master’s degree in the natural sciences.

Collections Assistant V
Plant Pathology & Plant Microbe-Biology
College of Agriculture and Life Sciences
The Department of Plant Pathology seeks a highly motivated individual to work in the Plant Pathology Herbarium. Manage a large fungal herbarium, including managing loans, accessioning specimens, maintaining an effective index, and reorganizing the collections. Develops and implements integrated pest control strategies. Implement a data computerization process using commercial software on a Macintosh computer. Develop, update and maintain the Herbarium website. Conduct public outreach and/or independent research relating to the collection fungal taxonomy and documentation, collection development, curation methods. Give occasional demonstrations of herbarium working procedures, lead tours of the herbarium, and identify fungi for members of the public. Assist in developing a public outreach program through web, workshop, and print media. Provide supervision to students and volunteers as needed. Train and orient students and volunteers to ensure that all laboratory protocols and procedures adhere to safety requirements. Assist in fund-raising to support collection development. Responsible for making some decisions, which require consideration of various criteria. Work closely with PI under general supervision, keep supervisor informed of progress.
Job Qualifications
Required:
Bachelor's degree in Natural Sciences, or other formal training program of four years or equivalent; more than 2, but less than 4 years or equivalent combination in Museum Management, or related fields.
* Some knowledge of botanical nomenclature and / or systematics is needed.
* Must have demonstrated ability to handle sensitive/confidential material in a professional manner.
* Previous experience working with database software.
* Must be personable, flexible, possess excellent, organizational and communication skills, good contingency planning abilities, and the ability to multitask.
* Requires close concentration and visual attention and the ability to develop effective working relationships with a wide variety of faculty, staff and students and outside cliental.
* Requires reasoning, analytical thought, creativity, and innovation in solving minor problems that occur day to day.
* The ability to use judgment in accomplishing tasks that are urgent; balance conflicting priorities, and make decisions from a range of choices.
* Must be able to work independently and must be comfortable spending long periods of time with little contact with other department members.
* Must have a valid driver's license.
* Ability to lift 30 lbs and use a step ladder to access high drawers.
* Must exercise sound and ethical judgment when acting on behalf of the University.
* Prior supervising experience.
Preferred:
* A Bachelor's or Master's degree is preferred in mycology, botany, plant pathology, museum management or education. Interest in learning about fungi is strongly preferred.
