Herbarium Information Manager for Digitization


Herbarium - Position Application Number: SC-1652

Summary of Responsibilities:

 The Herbarium Information Manager for Digitization will be responsible for the direction and management of the Digital Imaging Center, which produces Images for use in The New York Botanical Garden's Virtual Herbarium. She/ He will manage the daily operation of Virtual Herbarium's Digital Imaging Center in including: Set up and maintenance of digital SLR cameras, scanners and computer equipment, trouble-shoot equipment problems, and interact with venders and technical staff; oversee and train staff to capture digital images of herbarium specimens, and to digitize text, photographs and other illustrative material, including step-by-step operation of equipment and software and developing user manuals; batch processing and upload of images to the Virtual Herbarium; develop best practices for preservation and long-term archive of 300,000+ digital images for the Virtual Herbarium; develop best practices for efficient imaging work flows and track status of multiple grant-funded imaging projects; develop image quality control standards for multiple imaging stations and resolve problems; ensure the Digital Imaging Center meets the needs of staff and other scientific and scholarly users in terms of quantity, quality and type of images and data provided; work with software providers to customize applications for the Virtual Herbarium and to test and evaluate those applications; keep abreast of developments in imaging technologies and web display applications for images and digital publishing; give presentations on the image management of the Virtual Herbarium at national and international professional meetings; help prepare written text for grant proposals to funding agencies to support Virtual Herbarium digitization projects; give presentations on NYBG digital projects to visitors, donors, and colleagues. 

 

Preferred Experience:

Digital project management, digital imaging and digital photography standards, and management and preservation of digital images. Experience in a museum or research laboratory preferred.

*Bachelor's in Biology with background in botany and taxonomy preferred.

*Operating and maintaining imaging equipment, including digital SLR cameras and scanners.

*Adobe Photoshop CS and Lightroom; Microsoft Excel and Access.

*Overseeing the production and management of large numbers of digital images.

*Community-based best practices for digital photography and capture and color management and profiling.

*Familiarity with technical, administrative, and descriptive image metadata, including XMP, EXIF, and IPTC.

*Digital asset management systems and museum databases, especially KE EMu.

*Training and supervision of staff.

*Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

*Knowledge of PHP and XML preferred.

*Bulk image processing programs and shell scripting preferred.
