[Taxacom] Drosophila melanogaster name change?

Cryptics? Well apparently not as such, but "Among all Drosophila species,
D. melanogaster is probably the  most differentiated into geographic
subpopulations or races,  according to habitats (alcohol tolerance) or
climate (latitudinal  clines)"

Interesting paper, with some taxonomic background. Apparently the synonym
D. ampelophila Loew (1862) was initially widely used in lit, including by
Morgan in his first articles.  I guess everyone then coped with that
change, so .... really ... what's the problem?
