Unfortunately the collection on display at the AMNH probably never
belonged to Alfred Russel Wallace - see my comments about it on my
Wallace blog http://wallacefund.info/en/news_and_views
A few days ago I found a letter Wallace wrote to Henry Walter Bates in
1846 which further reinforces my conclusion and I will write a post
about this for my blog soon.
Wallace's private collection of insects as described in his
autobiography My Life, is in fact housed at the Natural History Museum,
London - see
http://www.nhm.ac.uk/nature-online/collections-at-the-museum/wallace-col
lection/introduction3.jsp I initiated the project to buy it and an large
collection of Wallace's manuscripts from Wallace's grandson in 2002.

Probably most of you already saw this, but just in case you missed, here
is a link to an article in the New York Times about a cabinet that
belonged to Alfred Russel Wallace. It is now on display at the American
Museum of Natural History:
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/24/science/24cabi.html?_r=1&ref=science
And here are photos of some of the drawers, with specimens in remarkably
good condition (click on the photos to view larger photo):
