Armen Takhtajan was born on June 10, 1910 in Shusha, Nagorno-Karabakh, a disputed, largely Armenian, enclave within Azerbaijan on the southern Caucasus. Most of his professional career was spent at the Komarov Botanical Institute in St Petersburg (formerly Leningrad). He is best known for his system of classification of flowering-plants and in this respect collaborated with, and was a good friend of, the late Art Cronquist (1919-1992).

Itis my sad duty to inform you that Armen Takhtajan, great botanist,member of the Russian Academy of Sciences passed away on November, 13,2009 in the age of 99.

Civil funeral rites will take place atthe Komarov Botanical Institute on Thursday, November, 19, 2009 at 11a.m. followed by church service and funeral on Armenian part of theSmolensk cemetery in St. Petersburg.
