A much more general problem I see is that with the steadily
descreasing number of persons able to identify species correctly
(and a continuously lower number of skilled persons who are able to
teach others) it cannot be expected that molecular biologists
are having correct identifications for the specimens for which they
provide sequence data.
Edi Gittenberger did certainly not screen systematically for
molecular papers on molluscs. This was just a random example he
found coincidentally. Most misidentifications will remain
undetected.
