Interactive Keys for All Species of Legumes in the US and its Territories Now Available
The United States Department of Agriculture's National Plant Data Center, in a collaborative project with the Missouri Botanical Garden, has just posted interactive keys to all species of legumes in the US and its territories (http://npdc.usda.gov/technical/plantid_wetland_mono.html). As posted, the keys are atomized geographically by state or territory and are free for use online or for download and offline use. Note: if downloading, please remember to open the ZIP file and copy it's contents to a different folder to fully unzip them. There is no installation of any kind required to run the keys either locally or online. The data matrices in the keys are open and easily subsetted for local lists or specific groups of taxa and can be modified to include images and other multimedia of any size as well as links to anywhere on the internet or local machine with simple html tags. The key application (SLIKS) is free and released under the GNU Public License and thus can also be legally modified according to the GPL. These Legume keys compliment the previously released keys to all Grasses, Gymnosperms and Wetland Monocots in the US and its territories already available at PLANTS (http://plants.usda.gov). For more information please contact Dr. Gerald "Stinger" Guala (gerald.guala at la.usda.gov).
