[Taxacom] Lumpers and Splitters

Apologies if this is an old topic, but I couldn't find it in the list's
archives.

Does anyone know of a history of these terms, specifically of when they came
into use among biological systematists?

And, whether or not you know of such a history, does anyone know of any uses
of the terms prior to 1851 (which is the earliest I have located so far).
