A definitive list is of names is feasible and would be a good place to
start. A definitive list of taxon concepts, a phrase I loathe for its
inherent redundancy, would be harder and I question whether it is worth
putting much effort into attempting to define really old taxon concepts.
Personally, I appreciate the fact that TROPICOS tells me what other
names have been used for a particular name without telling me which is
the correct name. If the discussion were about definitive taxonomies and
requiring everyone to adopt the same taxonomy I would agree - it would
be a non-scientific approach.
But compiling a list of names that satisfy the requirements of the
appropriate code is feasible (and yes, I am aware that there are some
organisms with names under more than one code. This introduces a few
complications - but they are not insurmountable.
