It's already happening. ION is following other big players now in providing us with lots of puzzle games for the lazy evening and office hours (obviously by displaying unreviewed OCRs).
E.g., name: "Simous otacurus" author: "Java" <urn:lsid:organismnames.com:name:2943053>
Haha, I got it: = Simous obscurus Louwerens 1951.
No fun?

I believe it's stoppable, but it takes time. What we need most urgently is the safe ground of a list of availale names...

I checked one of my favourite animals with lots of epithet variants in
Thomson's ION system and found an interesting new typo, reverently
recorded.

Platynereis dwnerilii for dumerilii. Note this is linked to an oldish
paper (1959) and there's very unlikely to be the actual error in the
original paper or in the original Zoological Record entry (if there was
one
). It's screaming recent OCR scanning error at me (um represented as
wn).

Very curious. Hope large scale retrospective OCR'ing (so fantastically
useful otherwise) aren't creating lots of such and putting them on the
web.

Geoff
