Huh?

Cheapest Trimble receiver: $800
Pathfinder software: $2000

Garmin receiver: ~$150-300
software: freeware + spreadsheet

Obviously it depends on what you need it for (if you need differential
correction, for example), but if you can live with 5-10 m accuracy, and
your data goes one-way as points from the field to GIS, there's not
necessarily much need for processing in anything but a spreadsheet.
