Do you mean "split off *from* the tree of life"? The implication in all 
cases is that there was another branch that it split off *from*. What 
was that other branch? You've evidently excluded the 
metabacteria+eukarya clade, since you say that it didn't originate until 
later. And in the past you've postulated a paraphyletic eubacteria, 
which would argue that it didn't split off ever, but rather everything 
else split off from it.

Not trying to argue at this point; I don't understand what you are 
saying well enough to argue with it. :-)
