Dear All,
I haven't looked at the phylogeny of Porifera in many years, but
it now appears that the origins of Eumetazoa might be closest to the
homoscleromorph sponges, rather than the calcareous sponges. Whether
homoscleromorph sponges should still be classified as demosponges or a
separate new Class doesn't seem to have been settled yet. I clearly
have a lot of catching up to do on the sponge literature, so I haven't
yet formed an opinion either way.
