In some cases, the original author didn't look up the original 
reference, either.  Isaac Lea (who tried to name all freshwater 
mollusks in the 1800's) would produce brief descriptions of new taxa to 
establish priority, then publish more detailed descriptions and 
figures.  Unfortunately, the information sometimes changed between the 
original description and the detailed one, and the detailed description 
(or a later author's citation of the detailed description) is checked 
more often than the original.  Always check the actual original!
