Dear Taxacomers,

We are trying to understand the meaning of taxon names that show up in
the GBIF index that include the term "anon." This sometimes also
occurs with the term "ined" and sometimes occurs with a year.
Generally it is the last part of the cited name string but it
sometimes precedes the year.

Examples include

  Acacia conspicua anon.
  Lepraria jolithus (L.) anon.
  Byssus jolithus (L.) anon.
  Lepra jolithus (L.) anon.
Hygrocybe nitida (Berk. & M.A. Curtis) anon. ined. 1916
  Agaricus tenerrimus anon.
  Cortinarius acutus var. striatulus anon.
Deconica pratensis (P.D. Orton) anon. ined. 1969
Typhula phacorrhiza subsp. complanata (de Bary) anon. 1884
  Uredo duchesneae (Arthur) anon.

In a couple of cases the names cite 'anon' twice:

Uredo appendiculata var. appendiculata (anon.) anon.
Parmelia revoluta f. minor (anon.) anon

We aren't clear on the intent of this sort of annotation and I'm sure
some folks here must have an answer.

Thank you in advance,
David Remsen (GBIF)
