Mary,

web searches suggest strongly that the word is based on a coined German
word 'genom' = Engl. genome, from 'gen(e)' + (chromos)-oma or perhaps from
gen(e) + (s)oma so it seems reasonable to use 'genoma', as a third
declension neuter (page 80 in W.T.Stearn's Botanical Latin 4th edn) ; soma
(body) is primarily used (in Botanical Latin) as a component of Greek
compounds.

An alternative though related explanation takes the etymological dissection
a step further viz. gene + -ome, suffix denoting a defined system or
microcosm, from Greek -oma, noun suffix. (Stedman's Medical Dictionary,
28th Edition, Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, New York, 2006).

Full declension would be:

              Singular Plural
Nom: (subj.) genoma (n.) genomata
Acc: (obj.) genoma genomata
Gen: of the genomatis genomatum
Dat: to/for genomati genomatibus
Abl: with/by genomate genomatibus

Subject: [Taxacom] Latin for genome or haplome?

Does anyone have a suggestion please? No, I am not publishing a new
taxon solely on the basis of genome constitution but nor do I wish to
pretend that such data did not contribute to the argument for
recognizing it. I can invent something but if someone has already done
it, that would be nice.
Mary
