Although I'm not happy with well-funded or even poorly funded
duplication of effort in generating taxonomic databases, I use large
online compilations of various systematics-oriented material all the
time. Don't we all?
Tropicos is phenomenal for names and publication dates. Also important
to me and doubtless other botanists is Brummitt's list of authority
abbreviations on IPNI, where you can also search for "all names ending
in -aster" or the like. Herbaria like NY and MO with online databases of
their holdings perform a good service, IMO.
Then there is the vastly distributed user-supported PDF reprint
collection that authors help mount on their Web sites, and is accessible
via Google scholar which flags the PDF. Amazing what you can find there
that closed-access publishers squirrel away from researchers.
