For those of you interested in a succinct discussion of vicariance and
dispersal there is a recent article by Michael Heads published in the
Encyclopedia of Islands. The article includes a discussion of all the
major conceptual issues such as the dating of taxa and centers of
origin. There is a specific discussion of vicariance in the Pacific with
reference to the dispersal model, the role of volcanism and
metapopulations, and the vicariance model as well as aspects of Pacific
plate tectonics that are often overlooked in dispersal accounts. The
