Advanced Tropical Field Ecology and Conservation Course, July 9 - August 7, 2009, Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden, Yunnan, China


This program is an intensive 4 week course in field
research methods, research design, sampling and analysis designed for
graduate students and advanced undergraduates in Ecology and
Conservation.

Format:
The Advanced Field Ecology and Conservation-Xishuangbanna (AFEC-X)
Summer Course activities will be split between lecture and fie! ld
exercises. Students will participate in established long term
monitoring experiments and further gain experience in independent
project design. With guidance, students will design and present
research proposals and further conduct field based data collection. The
course concludes with a symposium, where students present results of
course activities amongst their peers and instructors. 
Where:
The course convenes in Kunming, capital city of Yunnan Province.
Orientation, Introduction to the Course and a series of lectures will
be given in Kunming before moving to Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical
Garden (XTBG) in Menglun, China. Both the long term and independent
research projects will take place in and around Menglun.

Topics:
Tropical Ecology, Eco-Physiology, Taxonomy, Evolutionary Ecology, Plant
and Animal Interactions, Biodiversity, Conservation Biology, Invasive
Species! and more. Further discussions will look at how these topics are
af fected in human dominated landscapes. 

Instructors:
The various topics will be taught by professors from several institutes
including The Chinese Academy of Sciences, Texas Tech University,
Peking University and the Smithsonian Institute.
