Our information security folks are considering getting a network 
monitoring appliance that comes standard with 14 terabytes of storage 
and can be expanded, iirc, to 200 terabytes, and that's for storing 
*network traffic* in order to investigate security breaches. I just 
recently installed a 1 terabyte second drive in my computer at work. 
Storage is so ridiculously cheap that it is easier and less costly to 
save everything when data are transferred than it is to winnow. At the 
same time, our library has discarded physical books for lack of storage 
space. As the world fills up with stuff, digital records may be 
increasingly more likely to be retained than physical ones.
