Funny you should mention that. I've just had hassles because an editor
sent a reprint PDF for me to distribute, and one recipient couldn't open
it in Acrobat 5. The editor apologised and was going to look into the
matter, but he said everyone with Acrobat Reader 9 could open it. I've
got several open-source PDF programs (default is Evince in Gnome under
Linux), and all of them open all the PDFs I've looked at, old and new.
Maybe the problem isn't the proprietary default format, but the
proprietary default Reader that so many people use?
