*PhD-Position, Seed Dispersal Modelling, **PG B5.1 [Ref. #B13]*
*BAT IIa/2***

* *
The candidate has to develop a process based and spatial explicit model
simulating seed dispersal by running water. Field and lab-experiments
have to be accomplished to parameterise and develop the model. The
project aims to improve our understanding of dispersal and migration of
plant seeds. Especially, the model will be used in combination with
other already existing seed dispersal models to analyse whether plant
species are able to migrate fast enough to keep up with the expected
shift of their climatic envelopes.
The applicant must have a degree in biology, geography, bioinformatics,
informatics or similar field of study and have some experience with
empirical or process based models. In addition, the applicant should be
competent in written and spoken English and enjoy working in
interdisciplinary team. Knowledge of German would be an advantage, and
at least the willingness to learn basic German is required.
Salary and benefits are according to a public service position in
Germany (BAT IIa/2).
The Research Centre advocates gender equality. Women are therefore
strongly encouraged to apply.
Equally qualified severely handicapped applicants will be given preference.
The contract shall start as soon as possible and will initially be
restricted to a period of two years. An extension is possible being
subject to personal performance and availability of funds. The duty
station will be Frankfurt am Main, Germany. Official employer is
SENCKENBERGISCHE NATURFORSCHENDE GESELLSCHAFT.
Please apply by sending your application by e-mail (preferred) or mail,
including a letter, outlining your suitability for the post, and
detailed CV, contact details of 2 referees, and a copy of your
diploma-thesis until August 15, 2008 to

PhD-Position, Population biology and range dynamics of
*/Ambrosia artemisiifolia/**, **PG B5.3 [Ref. **#B14]*
*BAT IIa/2***

Common Ragweed (/Ambrosia artemisiifolia/) is a neophyte currently
dramatically expanding its range in Southern and Central Europe. The
wind dispersed pollen is a very strong allergen causing serious health
problems in several European countries.
The aim of the PhD project is to study population biology and dispersal
processes of /Ambrosia/ in order to find measures against the further
spread of the species and to develop models predicting /Ambrosias /range
dynamics and pollen flight in relation to climate change.
The applicant must have a degree in biology, geography, meteorology,
bioinformatics, or a similar field of study. Candidates should be
willing to undertake periods of fieldwork and hold a driving licence and
experience in carrying out biological field work or common garden
experiments would be advantageous. In addition, competence in
statistical analysis and ecological modelling techniques is desirable.
Applicants must be competent in written and spoken English, and enjoy
working in interdisciplinary team. Knowledge of German would be an
advantage, and at least the willingness to learn basic German is required.

We see a dynamic, self-motivated young scientist with skills in
ecological and statistical modeling. The candidate will integrate
statistical and process-based methods for predicting the distribution
and dynamics of vegetation surfaces. The candidate is expected, in close
collaboration with a team climate modelers, to couple vegetation models
to climate models and thereby explore feedbacks between climate and
vegetation. In this regard, we are particularly interested in developing
methods for representing biodiversity and changes in biodiversity in
currencies relevant for climate models.
The ideal candidate should have a background in applied mathematics,
ecology or a related discipline. A strong international publication
record is required. Technical skills in dynamic modeling, modern
computational statistics, fluency in programming languages (Fortran and
or C++) is expected. Familiarity with the implementation of parallel
systems models would be an added recommendation. Good written and oral
English language skills and interest in joining a multidisciplinary
research team are required. Knowledge of German would be an advantage,
and at least the willingness to learn basic German is required.

Global warming changes regional vegetation. The vegetation feedback on
regional climate is less well understood. Within the PhD-project a
dynamical vegetation model (based on the Lund-Potsdam-Jena dynamic
global vegetation model) will be implemented and tested within the
regional climate model system CCLM (www.clm-community.eu
<http://www.clm-community.eu/>). The main scientific questions are (a)
what are and how important are the regional-scale biogeophysical
feedback mechanisms (by change in albedo, evapotranspiration etc.) on
climate and (b) what are probable bio-climate scenarios (derived by CCLM
projections for regions with extreme climate)? This will be done in
close co-operation with partners and other PhD-students in the research
centre.
The applicant should hold an earned master or diploma degree in
meteorology, hydrology, mathematics or similar. Good written and oral
English language skills and interest in joining a multidisciplinary
research team are required. Knowledge of German would be an advantage,

The impact of climate change on the West African monsoon is at present
not understood. One key uncertainty is the land surface-atmosphere
interaction. Within the study available data and specifically designed
sensitivity experiments conducted with a regional climate model (CCLM,
www.clm-community.eu <http://www.clm-community.eu/>) will be analysed
for quantification of land surface-interaction. Special emphasis will be
put into the impact of parameterization of vegetation in the models. The
final step will be the provision of an ensemble of regional climate
projection with projection uncertainty in the West Africa monsoon area
for impact modelers.
The applicant should hold an earned master or diploma degree in
