B “Biodiversity and Climate” invites applications for a

*_Postdoctoral Researcher ‚Ecological Niche Modeling‘_**__*

The task involves further development of ecological niche models in
order to predict the reaction of organisms due to climate changes. The
task involves development of methods to consider and parameterize
climate and other environmental factors with a high spatial and temporal
resolution. In cooperation with other researchers of the research centre
the models will be applied to a wide range of organisms in different
study areas, especially Africa and Central Europe.
Applicants must possess appropriate scientific competence in relevant
fields at a level equivalent to a doctorate (PhD). Especially, the
applicant is expected to have strong methodological skills in ecological
niche modelling and geographic information systems (GIS). Additionally,
experience with the interpretation of remote sensing data would be
useful. Very good written and oral English language skills and an
interest in joining a multidisciplinary research team are required.
Knowledge of German would be an advantage, and at least the willingness
to learn basic German is required.
Salary and benefits are according to a public service position in
Germany (BAT IIa).

Postdoctoral Researcher - Ref. PG D 5.1 [#D04]
BAT II a
The applicant will be responsible for a project aiming to identify
candidate genes playing key roles for climate adaptation in various
invertebrate taxa (/Daphnia/, /Chironomus/, /Radix/). The project
investigates genes which are positively selected along a climate
gradient, including cross-taxon similarities. To this end, genomic
resources (EST bank, micro-array) for /Radix /have to be established;
for the other taxa, these resources are already available. Furthermore,
the technical implementation of the high throughput laboratory is part
of the responsibilities. The incumbent will also be responsible for the
organisation of advanced training courses. Participation in university
teaching and in the acquisition of external research funding is highly
desired.
The applicant should hold an earned Ph.D. in molecular biology,
preferably with a strong focus on transcriptome analysis. She or he
should already have experience with high throughput technologies and
should be interested in ecological and climate change issues. Applicants
should have a strong publication record. Very good written and oral
English language skills and an interest in joining a multidisciplinary
research team are required. Knowledge of German would be an advantage,
and at least the willingness to learn basic German as well as proven
organising abilities are required.

The applicant is expected to have expertise in the following areas:
Excellent knowledge of the German flora, experience in analysis of
scientific plant collections and distribution data as well as experience
with biodiversity databases. The focus of the project is to study
scientific archives, extract relevant data on past distribution of
relevant species groups of Higher Plants, and analyse these data in the
light of past and projected climate change.
The position will cooperate closely with the department of Prof. Dr.
Georg Zizka and Herbarium Senckenbergianum (FR). The successful
applicant is expected to participate in the university teaching of this
department.
The applicant should hold a diploma or Ph.D. in biology/botany.Very good

The applicant is expected to have expertise in development and applying
genetic markers (e.g., microsatellites, AFLP, sequence data). The PhD
candidate will investigate genetic population structure in cold-adapted,
montane species in central European mountain ranges. In particular,
research will focus on patterns of gene flow and isolation among
populations, inbreeding levels within isolated relict populations, and
to identify conservation units. Besides the molecular part, field work
and controlled laboratory experiments on temperature and general stress
tolerance will be conducted. The study is focused on plants, but not on
a certain taxonomic group.

The applicant will be responsible for the identification of key genes
for the ecological adaptation to climate change in the non-biting midge
/Chironomus riparius/. In common garden experiments populations will be
exposed to conditions along a climate gradient. Furthermore, genes have
to be identified which play a role in the climate-driven niche
partitioning of /C. riparius a/nd /C. piger/. These investigations will
be conducted in cooperation with Profs. Hankeln and Schmidt (University
Mainz).

The applicant will develop a technique for the automated molecular
identification (barcoding) of scientifically and economically important
freshwater communities. To this end, a data bank with nuclear and
mitochondrial DNA sequences has to be established based on specimens
which have been identified taxonomically by experts in advance. With
their aid quantitative and qualitative analyses of species compositions
in mixed samples will be established using second generation sequencing
techniques (pyro-sequencing).
The applicant should hold an earned Diploma or Master degree in biology,
preferably with a strong focus on transcriptome analysis using high
throughput technologies. She or he should already have experiences with
taxonomic concepts, data banks and should be interested to cooperate

PhD Position ‘Quantifying ecosystem services and their changes in

The candidate will assess the role of useful wild plant species as one
of the important ecosystem services in West African savannas. By
compiling data on useful wild plant species and developing approaches
for evaluating their value under consideration of the local
socio-economic and cultural context tools for decision and policy makers
will be developed. The candidate will also cooperate closely with
botanists and modelling experts of the Bio+C Centre studying species and
ecosystem changes under different climate and land use change scenarios
to evaluate the possible consequences of these changes for the ecosystem
services in regard to rural communities. Besides compiling of available
data on plant use, field work (market studies, ethnobotanical
interviews) in Burkina Faso and Benin will be performed. The research
project (project leader is Dr. Karen Hahn-Hadjali) is linked to large
international research projects in the region (BIOTA:

The applicant should hold a MSc degree/Diploma in biology (botany),
ethnobotany or related fields and should have experience with
