The Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre (Bio+C) has recently been 
founded by the Senckenbergische Naturforschende Gesellschaft, the 
Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main, and additional partners. It is 
funded by the Hessian State Initiative for the Development of Scientific 
and Economic Excellence (LOEWE). The mission of the Centre is to carry 
out internationally outstanding research on the interactions of 
biodiversity and climate change at the organism level. The Project Area 
B "Range Dynamics of Species" invites applications for the position of a

 


    PhD student ,Colonization dynamics of indigenous and invasive
    aquatic species' (Ref. TP B 8) [# B08]

 

The main focus of the research project is to investigate colonization 
dynamics of indigenous and invasive aquatic species on a regional scale 
and to model the effects of climate change on colonization potential of 
indigenous and non-indigenous species (NIS). Global warming will 
severely alter environmental conditions in freshwater environments. 
Increased water temperatures and reduced oxygen levels, for instance, 
may affect the dissemination potential of invasive species, leading to 
unpredictable alterations of freshwater communities and ecosystem 
services. The main task of the research is to investigate factors 
limiting the distribution of aquatic indigenous and non-indigenous 
species in selected streams of the Rhein-Main area. This area is highly 
affected by aquatic NIS, mainly as a consequence of severe anthropogenic 
disturbance and high propagules in consequence of the opening of the 
Main-Donau canal in 1992.

 

The applicant is expected to have some expertise in the following areas: 
freshwater (stream) ecology, invasion biology, data management & 
statistics. The successful applicant will cooperate with various 
ecologists working on the effects of climate change on freshwater 
communities. She or he will be responsible for sampling and 
characterization of benthic stream communities, collecting ecological 
data, and analyzing large ecological datasets.

The applicant should hold a masters or equivalent degree in biology, 
ecology, freshwater science or similar. Very  good written and oral 
English language skills and an interest in joining a multidisciplinary 
research team are required. Knowledge of German would be an advantage, 
and at least the willingness to learn basic German is required..

 

Salary and benefits are according to a public service position in 
Germany (BAT IIa/2).

The task involves application (and further development) of ecological 
niche models to selected Central European freshwater invertebrates in 
order to predict the shift of ecological and climatic envelopes due to 
climate change. The focus will be on freshwater invertebrates from 
running waters.

 

The applicant should hold a masters or equivalent degree in biology, 
bioinformatics, mathematics or a similar field of study. She/he must 
have strong skills in statistics, especially geo-statistics and some 
experience in the field of freshwater ecology. Very good written and 
oral English language skills and an interest in joining a 
mutlidisciplinary research team are required. Knowledge of German would 
be an advantage, and at least the willingness to learn basic German is 
required.
