* as an unemployable, I don't have any personal experience with concern 
for promotion or salaries, but it seems to me that when the author, and 
especially the author and date, of a name is given with the name, that's 
a citation to the original publication. It's an older format, from an 
era when there were fewer publications to be confused among, but if the 
taxonomic literature is to be online, it should be possible for 
citation-scrounging programs to parse the publications indicated by the 
author and date of a name.
